Police update - Death of Matthew Schofield - seven people released with no further action

Seven people arrested on suspicion of murder as part of the investigation into the death of Matthew Schofield have been released with no further action.

Mr Schofield died on Sunday 11 June 2023 after being found unresponsive in Belgrave Road, Leicester, in the early hours of the morning.

Enquires confirmed he was assaulted at the location shortly before 3am.

For more than three years detectives have been carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of the 34-year-old – including working to identify those believed to be involved in the assault.

As part of the investigation, police have arrested a number of people. Seven men, who were all arrested on suspicion of murder, have now been released with no further action.

Seven people - six men and one woman - arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, still remain released under investigation.

The investigation into the death of Mr Schofield still remains an active police case.

Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Major Crime Team, said: “Seven people arrested on suspicion of murder have been released with no further action. However, I want to be clear, that this decision rests on the strength of the evidence we currently have available to us.

“This investigation will remain open and active. We are committed to pursuing all lines of enquiry and will carefully assess and investigate any new information that comes to light.

"At the heart of this investigation is Matthew's mum, Emma Daniels, who continues to live with the devastating loss of her son every day. She still grieves for Matthew and deserves justice and to know exactly what happened to him.

"We still believe there are people in the community who know what happened to Matthew and know who is responsible for assaulting him in the early hours of 11 June 2023. Three years on it is not too late - if you witnessed something, heard conversations afterwards, or have been told information about those involved, please come forward and do the right thing.”
