If you go down to the woods today - bring a picnic, NOT a barbecue!

A Message from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue service - If you go down to the woods today - bring a picnic, NOT a barbecue!

Yesterday our crews from Coalville Station were called out to a fire at Grace Dieu Woods, outside Thringstone, caused by a disposable barbecue that had been left unattended.

Thankfully the fire was brought under control before it could spread too far, but we have returned since, and will be going back again today to make sure the fire doesn't restart, such are the conditions of the ongoing heatwave.

We strongly urge against using disposable barbecues or campfires in the wild right now; if you MUST use one, ensure it is doused thoroughly with liquid once finished (judging by all the bottles and cans left lying around, these people had plenty of it!)

Our Leicestershire and Rutland countryside is beautiful, but thoughtless actions could destroy parts of it forever:
