“You took so much from me. I will not allow the impact to go unheard” – victim speaks out as her groomer is jailed

A woman who was 15 when she was groomed on Snapchat and subjected to a number of sexual offences has spoken of the lasting impact and her determination to finally have her voice heard.

Now aged 20, the victim – whose identity is protected by law, was 14 when she was first contacted by Shoaib Mohammed. After grooming her for seven months she was persuaded to travel to Sheffield where the crimes took place over four days.

Today (Thursday 29 October), the 35-year-old of Kentmere Drive, Doncaster, was sentenced to 11 years, after pleading guilty to nine offences just before the start of the trial last month.

The victim spoke during the sentencing hearing. She said: “For the first time in this process, I have the opportunity to speak without being interrupted and silenced.

“I ask you to listen to me. Not as a case. Not as a collection of evidence but as the 15-year-old girl who was at the centre of this, and the 20-year-old woman who has spent the last five years and will spend the rest of her life having to live with it.

“For five years, I have waited to be heard. I have had to relive the events, prepare myself mentally to face you in court. I had prepared myself to stand here and tell the truth about what happened when I was 15. I had prepared myself to once again rip the scab of a healing wound and let it bleed once more and then you pleaded guilty.

“And while that is a victory of acknowledgement that the evidence against you is substantial, I know the plea wasn’t for anyone but yourself, that felt like another loss of power.

“I have grown up while carrying something that should never have been placed on the shoulders of a child. I have had to grown from 15 to 20 with this experience permanently forming part of my life.

Shoaib you may have been able to walk away from the court without hearing me give evidence, but I will not allow that to mean that the impact goes unheard. You took so much from me when I was 15. You do not get to take this from me too.”

Her mother added: “Seeing my daughter experience the trauma and pain of what happened to her has been incredibly difficult. As her mother, I have felt helpless watching her struggle with the emotional consequences and seeing the effect this has had on her life. There is nothing more painful than watching your child suffer and knowing that you cannot take that pain away from them.

“Five years is an incredibly long time to live with the uncertainty, stress and emotional weight of what has happened. Throughout these years, I have had to watch my daughter carry the consequences of something that was not her fault. Seeing her experience pain, distress and the lasting effects of all this has been heartbreaking. As her mother, I have felt anger, sadness, frustration and helplessness.

One of the most heartbreaking aspects of the last five years is that I feel I have lost my daughter in many ways. I feel that I have lost precious time with her that I can never get back. These should have been years filled with memories, happiness and watching my daughter grow into the young woman she was meant to become. Instead, so much of that time has been overshadowed by what happened and the lasting impact it has had on her.

“This experience has changed me. It has affected my mental and physical health, my work, my finances and my everyday life. Most importantly, it has affected me deeply as a mother. I would do anything to protect my daughter from experiencing the pain she has endured, and it has been devastating to watch her go through this.”
