Special event to celebrate and thank carers

Celebrating this Carers’ Week

Unpaid carers are hidden heroes within our local communities and a special event has been held to say a big thank you to them. 

This week, Leicestershire County Council brought together 30 carers from across Leicestershire to recognise the vital contribution they make to the people they support. 

The event – held during Carers’ Week - is part of the council’s wider commitment to making sure more people recognise themselves as unpaid carers and know where to turn for help. 

Many people support a family member, partner or friend without identifying as a carer, meaning they may miss out on advice, practical help and emotional support. 

The council also took the opportunity to hear directly from carers about their experiences as it refreshes its Carers’ Strategy, helping shape better support for the future. 

Councillor Michael Squires, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care said:

“Unpaid carers are unsung heroes, providing invaluable care and support every day, often without recognition. This event is our chance to say a heartfelt thank you for everything they do. 

“We also want carers to know they are not alone. If you look after someone who could not manage without your help, you may be a carer and support is available. By listening to people’s first-hand experiences and refreshing our strategy, we want to make sure they feel recognised, valued and better supported.” 

It’s thought that there are around 60,000 unpaid carers in Leicestershire -

nearly 10 per cent of residents.

More than 300 unpaid carers have helped to shape the council’s new support strategy which is due to launch later this year.
