Leicester Carers Week Event Highlights Growing Need for Support

Who Cares for the Carers? Leicester Carers Support Service Event Offers Support and Advice

People across Leicester who help care for a loved one are being invited to a special Carers Week event next week, offering support, information and a chance to connect with others who understand the realities of caring.

Hosted by Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland and our Leicester Carers Support Service, the event is open to anyone who provides unpaid care for a family member, friend or neighbour.

While many people see themselves as "just helping Mum" or "looking after Dad", they may not realise that they are carers and could be entitled to support. Raising awareness of this is a key focus of the event.

The scale of caring across the city is significant. More than 26,500 people in Leicester identified themselves as unpaid carers in the 2021 Census, while over 10,120 carers are currently eligible for Carers Allowance.

The event aims to help carers recognise that support is available and that they don't have to navigate their caring role alone.

Visitors will be able to chat with the Leicester Carers Support Service team, learn about local services, and meet other carers in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Free tea, sandwiches and cake will be available throughout the day, and Mohins Chemist will be offering free blood pressure checks to help carers take a moment to focus on their own wellbeing.

Dave Bushby Carers Support Team Manager for the Leicester Carers Support Service said:

"Carers spend so much of their time looking after someone else that it's easy for their own needs to slip down the priority list. Carers Week is a chance to recognise everything carers do and remind them that support is available. Whether someone has been caring for years or has only recently found themselves in that role, we'd love them to come along, have a chat and find out what's on offer."

The event forms part of Carers Week 2026, a national campaign highlighting the contribution of unpaid carers and encouraging communities to become more carer friendly.

Anyone who provides care and support to a loved one is welcome to attend.
