Leicestershire Fire service warns of the dangers of charging Lithium batteries in the home.

In the early hours of Sunday morning Leicestershire Fire and Rescue service attended a fire in Ellistown involving a summer house that was caused by lithium batteries being left on charge overnight.

Thankfully no one was injured at this incident.

Lithium-ion batteries are found in many everyday items, including e-bikes, e-scooters, power tools, laptops and portable chargers.

While they are generally safe when used correctly, if they become damaged, overcharged or faulty they can fail rapidly, leading to an intense fire that spreads incredibly quickly.

To help keep yourself and your family safe:

1. Avoid charging lithium batteries overnight or when you’re out of the house.

2. Always use the manufacturer’s charger.

3. Charge batteries on a hard, non-combustible surface and keep them away from escape routes.

   
   

4. Stop using and safely dispose of any battery that shows signs of damage, swelling or overheating.

   
   

5. Never cover batteries or chargers while they’re charging.
