Fire crews responded to a house fire in Wigston last night at around 9:30 p.m., which was sparked by a stray firework.

Thankfully, no one was injured, but the roof sustained significant damage.

Public displays are always safer than setting off fireworks in your garden.

A spokesperson from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue said:

“Last night, at 21:37, our crews were called to a house fire on Sussex Road in Wigston, caused by a stray firework.

Five pumps attended, plus our aerial ladder platform, and worked through the night to extinguish the blaze.

Fortunately no-one was hurt, but the roof of the property was severely damaged.

Clearly, this incident could have been a lot worse.

Bonfire Night is over, but with Diwali on Sunday we must reiterate that organised, public displays are always safer than setting off fireworks in your garden.”
