BikeSafe Breaks Attendance Target as More Riders Take Up Advanced Safety Training
Leicestershire Police's BikeSafe team has exceeded its annual attendance target for 2026, with 57 motorcyclists successfully completing the nationally recognised rider safety programme.

At the end of 2025, an ambitious objective was set to attract 40 riders to attend BikeSafe courses during 2026. The team not only met that target but exceeded it by more than 40%, with 57 riders completing the course.
The achievement comes at a time when motorcyclists remain one of the most vulnerable groups on the road network.
Since January 2025, 16 motorcyclists have sadly lost their lives and a further 125 have been seriously injured on roads across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
BikeSafe is a national police-led initiative designed to improve rider skills, increase hazard awareness and encourage motorcyclists to consider continued post-test training.
Throughout 2026, Leicestershire Roads Policing Officers delivered 23 BikeSafe courses, as part of the programme, officers completed approximately 7,000 miles of patrol and assessment riding on key motorcycle routes, including the A47, A46, A607 and A6077, while delivering around 115 hours of police riding and 46 hours of classroom-based theory training.
The team also engaged with riders beyond the classroom, attending the British Superbike Championship events at Donington Park and Silverstone as part of the BikeSafe stand, and meeting motorcyclists at events hosted by the Triumph factory in Hinckley, along with motorcycle meets at Mallory Park and Stoney Stanton.

Superintendent Ben Gillard, from the Leicestershire Police Specialist Support Department, said:
"We are delighted to have exceeded our BikeSafe attendance target for 2026. Every rider who attends the course demonstrates a commitment to improving their skills and making our roads safer.”
"While these results are encouraging, motorcycle casualties remain a significant concern. The fact that 16 riders have lost their lives and 125 have suffered serious injuries this year highlights why initiatives such as BikeSafe are so important.”
"Our message to all riders is simple: never stop learning. No matter how experienced you are, there is always something new to take away from professional rider training."
