Man jailed for rape 30 years on

Leicester crown court

A Leicester man who began sexually abusing a girl when she was just six years old has been jailed.

The crimes committed by 46-year-old Daniel Rawlinson occurred at an address in the city more than 30 years ago, between 1990 and 1991.

Today (Friday 14 January), at Leicester Crown Court, he was sentenced to six years and eight months' imprisonment, having pleaded guilty to four counts of indecent assault, one count of rape and count of assault by penetration at a hearing in October last year.

The abuse was brought to the attention of police in 2020, when the victim disclosed what had happened during her childhood. She told officers from the force’s Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU) that there were occasions when Rawlinson acted in an aggressive manner and that she became scared of him.

She recalled several incidents in which Rawlinson had touched her inappropriately, in addition to a further occasion when she was raped.

Rawlinson, of Overpark Avenue in Braunstone, was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely and is subject to a 15-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).

Detective Constable Andy Day, from the CAIU non-recent team, was the investigating officer. He said: “During the course of the investigation, the victim in this case provided a detailed account of what happened more than 30 years ago. This allowed us to charge Rawlinson with a number of offences.

“Thankfully, she has not had to relive her ordeal again, in front of a jury. I hope the fact he’s now serving a significant prison sentence will provide a degree of closure and allow her to move on with her life.

“I also hope that today’s outcome will remind victims of such offences across our communities that it’s never too late to speak out.”
