Avenue of trees planted at country park

Parish council funds 'green' initiative to support Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

In a ‘green’ collaboration between the county council and parish council, a new avenue of trees is now taking shape at Market Bosworth Country Park.

A total of 16 trees will be planted up by the end of the month as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy campaign, a scheme in Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee year which inspires people from all walks of life to play a part in enhancing the environment.

The hope for the initiative is that planting trees sustainably will leave a legacy for future generations - and the first of the new trees was planted by Councillor Dan Harrison, county council chairman, and Councillor John Wasteney, chairman of the parish council.

Councillor Dan Harrison, county council chairman said:

"It’s great to see so many groups, organisations and families coming forward to mark the significant occasion of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in such a memorable and environmentally-friendly way.

Our ambition in Leicestershire is to boost bio-diversity and make our county net zero by 2045. I’m pleased that this initiative not only celebrates a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, but also supports our local ambitions to be greener and more sustainable"

John Wasteney said: “The country park is such a wonderful attribute to our town and I’m delighted the parish council has been able to fund the avenue of trees in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee - and that it's right on our doorstep.

“Our arboretum featured on the Queen’s Green Canopy social media during National Tree Week due to its bright and bold colours and we’re excited to be involved in this scheme once again. This time, that means planting some trees as part of the initiative for our future generations to enjoy.

“The new trees will be a great addition to the park and I’d encourage residents to plan a visit to see the variety of trees which provide such spectacular displays as the seasons change.”

Already renowned for its arboretum, the new row of oak and hornbeam trees will add even more variety to the hundreds of tree species found on site.

The county council has a plan to help plant 700,000 trees – one for every resident – as part of its own ambitious strategy over the next decade.

Anyone wishing to plant their own tree for the Jubilee can find out how on the council’s Platinum Jubilee webpage at www.leicestershire.gov.uk/platinum-jubilee
