  • York Road set for £1.4m revamp

PLANS have been announced to invest £1.4milllion in a major revamp of York Road here in the City Leicester City Council is planning to carry out improvements to York Road – which connects Welford Road and Oxford Street – and create a safer and more attractive route for pedestrians and cyclists. The improvements will be funded with Government cash as part of the council’s successful bid for £7.8million from the Department for Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund. As part of the proposed scheme, the road will be pedestrianised between its junction with Oxford Street and Newarke Street car park. Traffic flow along the road will be adjusted so that vehicles leaving the car park will be required to turn left onto Welford Road, leaving the majority of York Road free from traffic. Vehicle access along the main stretch of York Road will only be permitted for residents, blue badge holders and businesses in the area. Footpaths will be widened in some sections and reconstructed in high-quality blocks, similar in appearance to Silver Street and Guildhall Lane. Improvements will also be made to Newarke Street car park. These will include the creation of an additional exit gateway and the introduction of automatic number plate recognition to help improve the flow of traffic in and out of the car park. The planned scheme will fill a missing link between the new £35milllion development on King Street, at the city centre end of New Walk, and De Montfort University’s campus on Millstone Lane, which has also recently seen a multi-million pound investment. It will also link to improvement works currently under way on nearby Grange Lane and Bonners Lane. The York Road scheme will be the latest phase of the wider Connecting Leicester programme, which is improving routes into and through the city centre and helping to make it more attractive to residents, visitors, businesses, investors and developers. City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: “York Road has the potential to be a really useful and direct link between the recently redeveloped New Walk Centre site and the DMU campus, which has also undergone a wonderful programme of improvements. “At the moment, they are connected by a road that is shabby and chaotic. We want to change that and transform York Road into a much more attractive route for pedestrians and cyclists. “At the same time, we’ll be introducing some key improvements to Newarke Street car park to make life easier for the hundreds of motorists that use this facility every day. “The York Road proposals were part of successful bid for £7.8milllion from the Transforming Cities Fund. That is a tremendous endorsement of the value and importance of this scheme.” Work is expected to begin from Monday 15 April and complete by late-summer 2019. Objections to the related traffic regulation order proposals were considered at a meeting of the Planning and Development Control Committee in mid-February. The council has listened carefully to concerns raised and has amended the proposals to provide more available parking for Blue Badge holders. A formal decision on the funding for the York Road scheme is due to be taken on Monday 25 March. Image Google Maps #LeicestercityCouncil #yorkroadleicester

  • Leicestershire Police Force supports National CSE Awareness Day

The force’s CSE (Child Sexual Exploitation) hub is supporting National Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness Day to increase awareness around CSE and the dangers its poses to young people. Today (Monday 18 March) is National Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness Day which aims to highlight the issues surrounding CSE across the country by encouraging people to ensure they think, spot and speak out against abuse. In 2014, Leicestershire formed the Multi-agency CSE (MA-CSE) team to tackle the ongoing issue with CSE. It consists of representatives from police, social care, health and other support workers, all based together at Wigston Police Station. The team is able to use their individual specialist expertise in identifying CSE and work jointly together by sharing information and resources to prevent and disrupt CSE, provide support to victims and advice on how to stay safe both on and off-line. As part of National Awareness Day, team members are being encouraged to wear red for the day this year and once again, to write a personal pledge on their hands to show support for the ‘Helping Hands’ campaign and to share their photos through social media. Detective Inspector Jenni Heggs, who leads the multi-agency CSE hub in Wigston, said: “Children are continuing to be groomed and exploited in many different ways and CSE sadly is a crime on the rise which is why we recognised the benefit of a multi-agency approach to tackle it. The team work extremely hard and constantly review their approach to best share the messages around CSE and ensure the public know how to report such incidents.” Donna Smalley, the Children’s Social Care Service Manager at the team, said: “We have carried out a number of campaigns around CSE targeting the leisure industry , hotels and taxi’s and private hire cars across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to recognise the signs of child sexual exploitation and help keep children and young people safe. “Work is constantly ongoing within schools, through workshops and through the creation of the short films Kayleigh’s Love Story and Breck’s Last Game to educate children around CSE and grow that awareness so that young people have more confidence to come forward to report incidents of this nature. “However this is not something that we can eradicate alone, and there is so much the public can do to help by spotting the signs and supporting by speaking out to stop it.” DI Heggs added: “CSE remains a priority for the force and we hope that events such as National Awareness Day keep CSE in the public domain and give a reminder that this is something that young people are still suffering from and that we remain committed to tackling it and bringing responsible to justice.” Advice around CSE and what the signs are can be found at https://leics.police.uk/categories/child-sexual-exploitation-cse or http://www.stop-cse.org/national-child-exploitation-awareness-day/raise-awareness/

  • Re-appeal after taxi driver left blinded in assault

Issued on 13/3/19 at 3:25 p.m. Detectives are re-appealing for witnesses to a serious assault on Christmas Day – which left the victim blind in one eye. Sujan Pal was working as a taxi driver in the early hours of 25 December, 2018 when he was approached by a man outside of the Rose and Crown pub in Uppingham Road, Houghton on the Hill. After refusing the man access to the vehicle, 39-year-old Sujan was punched in the face, causing serious damage to his left eye socket. He has been left completely blind in the eye and has had to leave his job as a taxi driver as a result of his horrific injury. Officers believe a number of people were in the area at the time but despite an appeal shortly after it happened many people who may have witnessed it have still not come forward. The victim, Sujan Pal, said: “All I want is to see out of my eye again. I am very worried about what the future holds. I need my vision to work and support my family. I have been a taxi driver for 12 years in Leicester, London and Vienna, this is the first time anything like this has ever happened to me. “I know that people saw what happened to me and I would ask that they please co-operate with the police and do the right thing so that this does not happen to anyone else.” DC Mike Archer, who is investigating the incident, said: “This was a very nasty and unprovoked attack on a man who was out working during the busy Christmas period. “A single punch to the face has left Sujan with life changing injuries and he is now unable to work and provide for his family. “We are aware that there were people around that night and specifically information has been received about the incident from some witnesses who for whatever reason are reluctant to provide written statements. “We would like to reassure anyone who witnessed the incident that the information they provide will be treated in the strictest confidence and the details they can provide could help us secure a successful prosecution for this callous assault. “If you are one of these people please get in touch. Any information you have, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could help us with our enquiries. If you do not want to speak to police you can also pass on information to Crimestoppers anonymously.” A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and released pending further enquiries. Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC 535 Archer on 101 quoting crime number 18*624154.
