It’s been reported a car had collided with a gas substation on The Ridings at around 6.30am causing a major gas leak. EMAS. East Midlands ambulance services are on standby in the area. Leicestershire Fire service also in attendance and have laid out hoses and are ready should there be a fire. Cadent Gas utility company is also at the scene, some local residents are without a gas supply this morning. A police spokeswoman said: “Officers were called at around 6.30am this morning to a report of a single vehicle collision in The Ridings. The vehicle, a black Peugeot, collided with a gas substation. The driver of the vehicle made off and enquiries are ongoing to locate them. Officers are supporting colleagues from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service who are at the scene responding to the incident. The Ridings is currently closed at its junctions with Westfield Lane and the Ridgeway and Swithland Lane is closed at its junctions with The Ridings, West Cross Lane and Carisbrooke Road. A small number of residents in nearby properties have been evacuated as a precaution and we are advising anyone living locally to stay indoors with their windows closed. Officers were called at around 6.30am on Friday morning (1 January) to a report of a single vehicle collision in The Ridings. The vehicle, a black Peugeot, collided with a gas substation while the driver of the vehicle made off from the scene. A 33-year-old man was arrested earlier today (3 January) on suspicion of failing to stop at a road traffic collision and perverting the course of justice. He has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries. Enquiries are ongoing into the collision. The incident caused some disruption as officers assisted with road closures in the area and the evacuation of a small number of properties as a precaution. Three police officers have been taken to hospital with smoke inhalation, 2 men have been arrested in connection with this incident. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue service were called by the police to a flat fire on Ottawa Road around 3.30am this morning. Fire crews from Eastern fire and 1 fire engine from Central fire stations attended. On arrival Incident Commander confirmed building of 3 floors, 5m x 5m, fire located in bedroom of 1st floor flat. 1 hose reel and 2BA used. Cadent requested due to smell of gas. Residents of neighbouring flats were evacuated as a precaution. 5 residents suffered slight smoke inhalation and were treated by EMAS at scene. The police tweeted earlier this morning that this incident may be linked with an assault at a nearby location. Reports are that a man had been stabbed somewhere in the area.  A police spokesperson said: "Police are in attendance at a flat fire in St Matthews following an assault which they suspect may be linked. At around 3am this morning (3 January), police were approached by a man in Eldon Street who had sustained a number of puncture wounds. Following enquiries carried out in connection with the assault, officers attended an address in Ottawa Road a short time after to discover a flat fire. Inside the flat was a man who was rescued from the property by officers and he is uninjured. The fire has since been extinguished by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service having caused substantial damage. As a result of their assistance, three officers are being treated at hospital as a precaution for smoke inhalation. The injured man remains in hospital where he is currently in a stable condition. A 40-year-old Leicester man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and a 26-year-old Leicester man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger fire. They both remain in police custody. A number of flats in the same block have been evacuated while emergency services respond to the incident and Ottawa Road remains closed at this time." Mubarak Jibril, 26, of Lancaster Place, Leicester, has been charged with attempted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, arson with intent to endanger life and arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered. A 40-year-old man, of Leicester, who was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with the incident has been released with no further action. A man, in his 50s, who was injured in the incident remains in hospital in a stable condition. Ottawa Road has since been reopened. A large police presence were seen on Aikman Avenue today. A police officer received injuries and has been taken to hospital after police responded to an incident at a nearby address. Fire & British Red Cross teams from Western Fire station opposite where the incident had taken place, quickly arrived and given immediate first aid. Crews from Western Fire station rushed to the incident A police spokesperson said: “We were called at 12.51pm by EMAS following a report for the concern for the welfare of a man inside a property in Piper Close who had sustained an injury. Piper Close Prior to the arrival of officers and EMAS, the man left the address. A search was carried out in the area for the man by officers who was found close to Aikman Avenue. The man has been detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act and will be going to hospital for treatment to his injury. Aikman Avenue in New Parks In the process of the man being detained, an officer sustained an injury to his leg. He is currently at hospital. His injury is not believed to be life threatening or life changing. Flats on Cordell Road Police are appealing for information following a serious stabbing in Loughborough. Officers were called at around 4.45pm today (1 January) to a report that a man had stabbed inside a flat in Cordell Road. The man has been taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition. A cordon remains in place at the scene while a forensic examination and further enquiries are carried out. Detective Inspector Chris Brett, who is currently overseeing the investigation, is appealing for anyone who may have information about what happened to contact police. He said: “This man has sustained some very serious injuries and is currently in hospital receiving treatment. “We are treated this as an isolated incident and it’s important we build a complete picture of the events leading up to this man being injured and establish exactly what happened. “I would therefore urge anyone who has any information about this assault to get in touch. Maybe you saw someone or a group of people leave the flat in a hurry and can provide a description of them or the direction they went? A total of 75 fixed penalty notices were issued by Leicestershire Police over the New Year period. The total value of all of these fines adds up to almost £74,000. Between 7am on New Year’s Eve (31 December) and 7am today New Year’s Day (1 January), police received 191 reports of Covid breaches by the public. Six of these fines were £10,000 fines for holding a gathering for more than 30 people, as below: Five people were issued with £10,000 fines for holding a party for over 30 people at a private residence in Kimberley House, Vaughan Way, Leicester One person was issued with a £10,000 fine for holding a party for over 30 people at a private residence in Granby Street, Leicester. Of the other issued fines: 57 fines were issued under Tier 4 for participating in a gathering of two or more people in a private dwelling/indoors. Assistant Chief Constable Kerry Smith said: “We are very pleased that the majority of people followed the rules and are part of the efforts to keep us all safe. However despite the warnings there were still people who thought it was okay to ignore all of the rules and government guidance risking the lives of all around them. “We have heard how the new strain of Coronavirus is rapidly spreading and it is vital that we take the appropriate steps to protect ourselves and our families. “If you choose not to follow the rules you are putting others at serious risk and you could face a significant fine. “Sadly, my officers, who have given up their own time with family over the New Year to keep the public safe providing a service throughout the day and night despite the risks, had to deal with people who thought the rules did not apply to them. 4 Fire crews called to House Fire in Thorpe Astley in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Fire crews from Southern, Wigston & Western stations attended along with Aerial platform from Birstall station. The Fire service were called at 02:28 to Darien Way in Thorpe Astley to reports of a Fire in roof. Initial Fire service report. “Call from the occupier reporting fire in roof of property. 2 appliances mobilised. Assistance messages followed for third appliances and Aerial Ladder Platform. House well alight. 2 breathing apparatus 2 hose reel and 1 main jet in use.” The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries have been reported. Updated 04:00 Aerial Ladder Platform being got to work removing roof tiles and assessing integrity of roof. Building inspector requested to attend. Emergency Response vehicle (Red Cross) have also been requested. Updated 10:00 The cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical fault, with 80% damage to the roof and 40% smoke and water damage to house. A driver has died following a road traffic collision in Leicester overnight. Police were called by East Midlands Ambulance Service at around 12.30am this morning (31 December) to a report of a single vehicle collision in Braunstone Lane East. The vehicle, a grey VW Polo, was travelling towards Narborough Road before it left the road. The driver, a man in his twenties, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The road is currently closed between its junctions with Narborough Road and Aylestone Road. Officers are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle beforehand to please get in touch. Alternatively, they would be keen to hear from anyone who has any dash cam footage which may have captured anything related to the incident. Officers have named a passenger who died in a collision in Willoughby Waterleys earlier this month. The collision was reported at 3.15pm on Sunday 20 December and involved one vehicle, a silver Ford Fiesta, which was travelling along Willoughby Road when it left the road and came to rest overturned in a ditch, close to the junction with Broughton Lane. There were four men in the vehicle, three of which were taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary with minor injuries. The fourth man, Thomas Gamble, 18 of Broughton Astley, Leicestershire, was the front seat passenger and sustained serious injuries. He was taken to University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire where he sadly passed away during the night. Officers are continuing to appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle being driven beforehand and haven’t as yet contacted police to get in touch. Also if anyone has video recording equipment installed in their vehicles and were in the area yesterday afternoon we would ask that they check the footage and contact officers if they have anything recorded which will assist with the investigation. On Tuesday 29 December at approximately 21:19pm, we attended a fire in a ground floor flat on Oak Street, Leicester. Crews from Eastern and Central Fire Stations attended the incident, along with East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS). Crews gained access to the flat, and one casualty was removed. CPR was administered, however the casualty sadly passed away shortly after. The cause of the fire was determined as accidental. This is a terrible tragedy, and the thoughts of the Fire and Rescue Service are with the family, friends and acquaintances of the deceased. As part of our post-incident response procedure, we are providing reassurance and advice on home fire safety in order to prevent any similar incidents occurring in the future. Leicestershire Fire and rescue are fighting a large blaze on Great Central Street tonight. 10 fire crews from across the county are currently at the blaze which is the M.O.T. centre. The fire service were called around 11.30pm to reports of a Commercial car garage involved in fire, building contains cars and tyres. Adjacent buildings have been evacuated by Police. No casualties involved. One of the evacuated residents said “its so cold tonight and no one is helping us, I have ask the police for some water but they said they have not got any.” We have contacted the police and Fire service to see what welfare is in place to look after the evacuated residents.  Leicestershire Police have released the following appeal this morning. Detectives are appealing for information following a fire at business premises in Leicester. Officers were called to Great Central Street, off Vaughan Way, at around 11.30pm yesterday (Tuesday 29 December). The fire had spread to neighbouring properties, causing some damage. However those living nearby were evacuated and no-one was injured. This morning, enquiries are continuing in partnership with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue service to establish the cause of the fire. No arrests have been made. Detective Inspector Mark Parish, from the force’s Complex Investigation Team (CIT), said: “The location of the building where the fire occurred is very close to Vaughan Way – a main route through the city. “I’d like to speak to anyone who was in Great Central Street or the surrounding area last night and who saw anyone acting in a manner that seemed unusual or suspicious.
