  • Leicestershire Police Force launches theft from vans campaign

Leicestershire Police has this morning launched a brand new campaign tackling theft from vans. The force wide campaign is looking to combat a common spike in this type of crime which often occurs in October as the nights begin to turn darker, earlier. Statistics from 2018 showed that there was nearly 130 more theft from vans in October, compared to September. The campaign includes a social media push, involving a video highlighting good van keeping practice vs bad and how to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of this type of crime. The force is also implementing a golden ticket style competition across the county. Crime preventions packs full of advice on how to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of this type of crime will be handed out across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, with van owners able to collect their packs from their local police station. In three crime prevention packs across the County will be a golden ticket, entitling the lucky winner to a specialised crime prevention van lock. Detective Inspector and vehicle crime lead at Leicestershire Police, Simon Preston, said: “I’m really pleased to be able to share this new campaign with the public. “Theft from vans is an extremely important issue that the force is tackling. “This is a crime that impacts people’s jobs and livelihoods. In a split second thousands of pounds worth of equipment can be stolen. This is costly, not only because stolen tools need to be replaced, but also because the time and business lost whilst waiting for new tools to arrive is so substantial. “There are steps van owners can take to help prevent themselves from becoming victims of this crime, something I hope our campaign will really emphasise. “We are encouraging van owners to: always make sure their vehicle is locked, no matter how quickly they think they will return to the vehicle. Security mark your tools, if in the unfortunate event your tools are stolen this will make them much easier to trace. When possible, remove all valuables from your vehicle. “Other tips when parking your van include: park in a well-lit area, near to CCTV. If you can, park as close to another vehicle or building to prevent access to doors. “Should you see any suspicious activity or have any information on this type of crime please let us know by calling 101 in a non-emergency or 999 in an emergency. more on keeping your vehicle safe www.leics.police.uk/cp/crime-prevention/theft-from-a-vehicle/vehicle-safe-and-sound/ #LeicsPolice

Chief Constable Simon Cole QPM, said: “This is a really exciting time for police officer recruitment and I am confident we will attract a diverse group of people who will enjoy living and working in the wonderful place that is Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. As I enter my thirty first year in policing I am really proud to lead a force whose performance is judged by the HMICFRS to be good and to this day I still think policing is a really rewarding job. “It is really important that our workforce represents the communities we serve and I am particularly keen to attract applications from people of all backgrounds, cultures, religion and experiences and I’d encourage everyone to consider a career that really does make a difference to people’s lives.” Police and Crime Commissioner Lord Willy Bach said: “People consistently tell me that they want to see more police officers on the streets and in their neighbourhoods. In response I have lobbied long and hard to see more investment in policing to enable us to increase officer visibility and I welcome this campaign. “Policing remains a great career, offering a breadth of opportunity and support and this latest round of recruitment will enable us to have a workforce that is more representative of the communities it serves and I urge people from all backgrounds to consider applying. It could be the job you’ve been waiting for.” There are now four different routes into policing and as a result the force is looking for non-graduates, graduates and career changers. Sergeant Yusuf Nagdi, has been a police officer for 14 years. He said: “I am really proud to be a police officer and enjoy working with our communities helping the most vulnerable but I also get great satisfaction using my skills and training to catch offenders and see them brought to justice I would recommend being a police officer to everyone. We have a strong family ethos, where teams work closely together to get the job done and give the best possible service.” Everything you need to know about recruiting can be found on the Leicestershire Police website at www.leics.police.uk/joinus

  • Picnic in the Park appeal to help needy children enjoy a holiday

City charity Leicester Children’s Holidays is organising a fund-raising afternoon of fun, music and good food at a Picnic in the Park. Families are invited to the get-together at Leicester’s Botanical Gardens on Saturday September 7. Revellers at the picnic will enjoy a host of entertainment including dazzling tricks from professional Leicester magician The Great Adamos and the Theatretrain group of performers who will entertain the young and old during the day. The picnic raises funds to send children on holiday. The recent trip organised and paid for by Leicester Children’s Holidays saw 44 children enjoy a break in Norfolk. The cost for each youngster was £391 and they learned about confidence-building and teamwork at an outdoor adventure centre – as well as having fun. Some of the children who went on this summer’s trip will be at the picnic. After the opening by Oadby and Wigston mayor Councillor Lynda Eaton, funfair games and stalls will be enjoyed alongside face painting, sweet and cake stalls and lots of entertainment. The talented Au-Yong family trio will play classical and other popular tunes. Acclaimed guitarist James Fitzsimmons will also play. He has long been a supporter of the charity and plans to record his own songs soon. Charity trustee Simon Toole is centre director at Theatretrain and will showcase young members of the stage school which offers drama, dance and singing classes for youngsters aged between six and 18. Laraine Tucker from Tai Chi group String of Pearls will perform a fan tai chi movement. The buffet will be served at 3pm and if the weather stays fine there will be bistro tables and tarpaulin laid out for the picnic. The Great Adamos will show off his magic skills as families enjoy the food. Charity chair of events June Lim, who works with a team of volunteers, said she especially wanted families to bring their children along. She said: “The idea is that a family can help a family who are not fortunate enough to send their child on holiday. “There is free parking outside the venue and everyone will get the chance to take a look around the botanical gardens which is a haven of peace. Do come along. It will be fun.” Those attending can take a picnic rug or folding chair. The full address is Glebe Road, Oadby, Leicester LE2 2LD. Tickets are £10 per adult and £5 for under 16s and can be bought directly from the charity’s office on 0116 251 9863 or by emailing hello@leicesterchildrensholidays.co.uk. • First look at proposals for new public realm scheme

Proposals for a scheme that would improve the links between the National Space Centre, Abbey Pumping Station and Leicester’s planned space and technology park have been drawn up by the city council. Artist’s impressions submitted as part of the planning application show a high quality scheme that would create a new sense of arrival at two of Leicester’s most popular visitor attractions, while helping to improve connectivity across the wider Space Park Leicester development site at Ellis Meadows. Under the proposals, the statue of the pioneer spaceman Ed White would be moved from its current location outside the space centre and become the centrepiece of the new public realm scheme. Granite and porphyry paving would be laid in a spiral form around the statue, with seating and new landscaping completing the scheme. A new, more inviting approach to the Abbey Pumping Station would also be created as part of the scheme, with new signage on the museum’s industrial buildings helping to give the popular attraction a more clearly defined entrance. City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: “This scheme will improve the approach to two of Leicester’s most popular attractions, helping to set the scene for a quality experience for visitors and creating a new sense of arrival. “Investment in the public realm is also part of the wider plans for the area, supporting the development of Space Park Leicester and helping to improve connectivity across the site.” Chas Bishop, chief executive of the National Space Centre, said: “These are really exciting times for the National Space Centre, with huge public interest in the 50th anniversary of the Moon landings and the pending arrival of the brilliant University of Leicester team on the new Space Park Leicester site. “This scheme will give visitors to these sites, as well as the wonderfully atmospheric Abbey Pumping Station, a calm, relaxing place to take a breath and absorb the compelling story of the pioneer spaceman before heading off for a great day at their chosen venue in this ever-evolving part of town.” The £300,000 public realm scheme is part of the Space Park Leicester and Pioneer Park infrastructure project, part-funded by £5m from the Local Growth Fund allocated by the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP). Subject to planning permission, work on the scheme could get under way early next year and would take around three months to complete. Source Leicester City Council News #LCC #LeicesterCityCouncil

  • Don’t be fooled – campaign to target money mules launched

Leicestershire Police has today (Thursday 29 August) launched a campaign to warn young people about the dangers of becoming money mules. The Don’t Be Fooled campaign was launched nationally at the end of last year and has been devised by UK Finance and Cifas to deter students from becoming money mules, by educating them about what the term means, how criminals operate, why they are a target and the consequences of taking part in such schemes. UK Finance is a trade association which represents the banking and finance industry operating in the UK and Cifas is a non-profit making fraud prevention membership organisation. Nationally there has been an increase in cases where young people are being asked to receive and send money through their own bank accounts, sometimes enticing them by allowing them to keep some of the cash for themselves. Since April this year more than 30 suspects have been issued with Cease and Desist Notices for money mule activity, therefore disrupting further criminality. Other methods are also available to the fraud investigators including community resolutions or criminal charges. In Leicestershire, between April 2009 and May 2018, 4,850 suspected money mule accounts were closed by the banks. Of those, 2,943 closures were for individuals aged 30 and under. The campaign also aims to alert parents to this fraud and look out for tell-tale signs that their child may be involved, such as suddenly having extra cash, buying expensive clothes or top-of-the-range gadgets with little explanation of where they got the money. Officers from the force’s economic crime unit have also delivered a presentation to key people at the local universities and colleges to make them aware of the campaign and enlist their support in getting the message across to students. Paul Wenlock of Leicestershire Police’s economic crime unit praised the campaign. He said: “We are pleased to support the national campaign. These schemes are of great concern to us and we have seen a steady increase locally in the number of people being drawn in to taking part. There may be various reasons why young people become involved but mainly it’s the promise of some easy money. “Criminals need money mules to launder the profits of their crimes. Usually the mules will be unaware of where the money comes from, they can be approached online, including via social media sites, or in person. Sometimes they may be persuaded by people who are doing it themselves. “Young people may not know the consequences of agreeing to take part in this, when someone is caught their bank accounts can be closed, they may end up having problems getting a loan, mobile phone contracts or credit and future job prospects can be put into jeopardy if they get a criminal record. “We would also ask parents, guardians and carers to be aware of this fraud and if they have any concerns to contact Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111 or Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.” Liz Ward is the Student Welfare Manager at Gateway Sixth Form College in Leicester, she said: “As an educational provider, we feel strongly that all our students, whilst with us, have the opportunity to learn about some of the wider issues and concerns facing our society today. “Money laundering, which is a criminal offence, appears to be a growing issue nationally, and young people need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to recognise it for what it is, know how to avoid it and also to have the confidence to report it. “At Gateway College, we are raising awareness of this important topic with our students, and are fortunate to have the valuable support of our local police in highlighting the associated dangers of money mules and money laundering.” Katy Worobec, Head of Fraud and Financial Crime Prevention, Cyber and Data Sharing at UK Finance, said: “Criminals are using young people as money mules in increasing numbers. We know that students are particularly vulnerable as they are often short of cash. That’s why we have launched the Don’t Be Fooled campaign. “We want to raise awareness of the fact that money muling is money laundering. When you’re caught, your bank account will be closed, making it difficult to access cash and credit. You could even face up to 14 years in jail. We’re urging people not to give their bank account details to anyone unless they know and trust them. If an offer of easy money sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” Simon Dukes, Chief Executive of Cifas, said: “Our new figures show that money muling amongst young people is on the rise. This is a serious issue that not only has consequences for the money mule, but for society as a whole. “The criminals behind money mules often use the cash to fund major crime, like terrorism and people trafficking. It’s this side of money muling that we want to raise awareness of with our new film. We want to educate young people about how serious this fraud is in the hope that they will think twice before getting involved.” For further information and advice visit www.moneymules.co.uk

From spring 2020, organ donation in England will move to an 'opt out' system. You may also hear it referred to as 'Max and Keira's Law'. This means that all adults in England will be considered to have agreed to be an organ donor when they die unless they have recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups. You still have a choice if you want to be an organ donor or not when you die. Why is the law changing? The law is being changed to help save and improve more lives. Every day across the UK, someone dies waiting for a transplant What do I have to do? We are asking everyone to: Record your organ donation decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register Tell your family and friends what you have decided Have you recorded your organ donation decision? If you would like to speak to somebody about your choices, please call our dedicated line: 0300 303 2094 When is the law changing? The opt out system in England will come into effect from spring 2020. The law around organ donation in England will remain ‘opt in’ until this time. Who will the changes affect? These changes will affect all adults in England unless they have recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the following excluded groups: Those under the age of 18 people who lack the mental capacity to understand the new arrangements and take the necessary action visitors to England, and those not living here voluntarily people who have lived in England for less than 12 months before their death Max, received a lifesaving heart transplant in August 2017 aged nine. He was on the waiting list for eight months after being diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy - a disease of the heart muscle. Following the diagnosis, Max’s parents were devastated. Dad Paul recalls: “It was absolutely awful being told Max would need a heart transplant. The wait was agonising; as a parent you are desperately looking for reassurance from the medics but with organ donation it’s the one thing they can’t give you.” Throughout his wait Max decided to share his story and support a campaign in favour of an opt-out system for organ donation. Dad Paul says: “Max met several children whose wait for a transplant was sadly too long. He wanted to help and be part of something that could stop it happening.” Max’s gift of life came from a young girl, Keira Ball, who passed away aged 9 years old. Her parents made the selfless decision to help others through their own tragedy. Max and Keira's law In 2018 the government announced that the law around organ donation would be changing and would be commonly referred to as Max’s Law, in recognition of all the campaigning Max and his family have done. Max announced he wanted Keira’s name to be added. The Bill received Royal Assent on 15 March 2019 and Max and Keira’s Law will be enacted in England in Spring 2020.
