- UK launches 5G mobile data service is 5 major cities today.
Itâs been launched in 5 major cities today, but if your in Leicester you will have to wait to the New year before 5G service becomes available. 5G is the Radio frequency of mobile phone data service 5G its much faster. But you will need a 5G mobile phone to use the faster internet service. Currently apple iPhones are not supported and a new phone will need to be released before you can benefit from this new service. Itâs 50 times faster the 4G but with a price increase on data charges along with a cost of a new phone. It should be able to offer download speeds of around 1Gb/s (gigabits per second) - maybe even 10Gb/s. That would make it possible to download an HD movie in just 10 seconds rather than around 10 minutes, as is currently the case. It should also pave the way for new technological advancements such as driverless cars, as it will offer lower latency. That should also be good for online gaming, delivery drones and other things that require an always-on connection.
- Robber threatened woman before stealing cash
A woman was left fearing for her life when a robber threatened her with a knife before stealing cash from her. Ali Golzari, 40, had been at a hotel in Leicester with the woman in November last year when his behaviour suddenly changed leading to him pushing her against a wall and grabbing her arm. The victim tried to defend herself by kicking Golzari and pushing back against him which led to them both falling to the floor. It was at this point the suspect pulled out a knife and began making threats to the woman. She continued to fight back and tried to leave as Golzari continued to make threats. Golzari then pushed her onto a bed where he again threatened her with a knife. The victim fought back defending herself and the fight continued before Golzari then grabbed some cash which had fallen out of the womanâs handbag and left. The victim, who suffered bruising to her body, made others aware of the incident leading to it being reported to the police. Golzari, of Jubilee Road, Leicester, was arrested and, following investigation, charged with the offence. Yesterday (20 May), at Leicester Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to five years and four months imprisonment. Detective Sergeant Sam Blackhurst said: âGolzariâs actions left the victim terrified and fearing for her life. It is thanks to her bravery and co-operation throughout this case that we were able to carry out a full investigation which has ultimately led to this conviction. âI now hope that this result helps her in some way as she continues to deal with the events of that day and the effect it has had on her since.â

- A summer of events here in Leicester to look forward to
Leicesterâs festivals already draw thousands of people from around the country, and in the case of Diwali â the world. This year the city council is aiming to attract more visitors by highlighting the best of the events set to run from May to September in a new summer programme. The Summer of Festivals brings together 10 major events taking place across the city, ranging from live music to family-themed fun and breath-taking public art projects. Leicesterâs City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: âWeâre already very proud of our diverse range of festivals which offer something for everyone, but this year weâve got even more to offer with brand new events that we hope will also become part of our annual programme. âAs thereâs so much going on weâve picked out some of the key events to give everyone a flavour of what they can expect if they join us in Leicester this summer.â The programme begins with the return of Bring The Paint, which last year attracted the cream of graffiti artists from across the world to create stunning, large-scale public street art on public buildings. It takes place from May 20 to 26, and as well as the creation of giant murals will include music, an art fair, street food, exhibitions and workshops. Leicesterâs ever-popular Riverside Festival will bring two days of family-friendly fun and activities to the banks of the River Soar, bringing alive the Mile Straight, Bede Park, Castle Gardens and Western Boulevard. The free festival will include fun on and off the river, live music and street performances, art, dancing and activities for all ages on June 1 and 2. Revive festival is a first for 2019: running over three weekends in June it celebrates the Mods of the 1960âs and gives people a chance to experience the decade through vintage fairs, live music and events, and more scooters than on the set of Quadrophenia. Inspired by the Mods: Shaping a Generation and Modified exhibitions running at New Walk Museum and Soft Touch Arts, Revive will take place at various venues across the city from June 15 to 30. Also unique to 2019 is One Giant Leap â a series of events marking the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landings. Running from July to October, activities range from a family astronomy session to a night in the museum, as well a whole series of events at the National Space Centre. Leicesterâs Caribbean Carnival has grown into one of the largest outside London since it was first held in 1985. This yearâs theme is âThe Windrushâ with the focus on the Caribbean communityâs contribution to the UK. As well as a street parade of multi-coloured floats through the city centre thereâll be a massive party with music and food on the cityâs Victoria Park, all on August 3. New to Leicester this summer are the Gigs in the Gardens â a series of large-scale outdoor concerts in the beautiful surroundings of De Montfort Hall taking place between August 16-26. Kaiser Chiefs, the Vaccines, Jax Jones and Busted are among the top acts performing there, as well as DJ sets from Groove Armada, Pete Tong and Danny Howard. The series will end on a classical note with a family performance from the Bardi Orchestra rounded off with a firework finale. From August 17-31, the two-week Ride Leicester festival will bring more than 30 fun, free cycling-related activities to the city centre and neighbourhoods, aimed at helping people to enjoy discovering the city by bike. The festivalâs flagship event is Letâs Ride Leicester, on August 25, when thousands of riders of all abilities join a 6km traffic-free, mass participation ride across the city centre, with cycling-themed attractions and activities along the route and the chance to ride your bike through Leicester Cityâs King Power Stadium. The Leicester Belgrave Mela returns on August 18, bringing a day of amazing street performances, mouth-watering South Asian cuisine and the Mela shopping bazaar. Visitors can enjoy awe-inspiring performances from the Grand Indian Circus and music from the Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band. From August 19-23, Leicester's City Festival will deliver five fun-packed days of street entertainment, sports, culture, music and arts. With a theme of âOut of This Worldâ, the celebrations will continue into the early evening, with a number of concerts on the main festival stage. There's a celebratory event to round off Leicester's Summer of Festivals, as Leicester Pride - the cityâs annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) festival - takes to the streets. Join the parade and march with pride through the city centre on August 31, before enjoying music, a fun fair and great family entertainment on Victoria Park. www.leicesterpride.com Download the Leicester City Council events programme here. https://www.visitleicester.info/dbimgs/Summer%20of%20festivals%20brochure.pdf Full details of the Summer of Festivals programme and other things to do in Leicester are available at visitleicester.info #LeicesterCityCouncil

- LEICESTERSHIREâS RESCUED WAR MEMORIALS Open day
A local project is inviting residents from Leicestershire and Rutland to attend to an open day on Saturday May 18th to learn more about the many local war memorials it has rescued and restored. The Leicester City, County & Rutland At Risk War Memorials Project also wants to encourage locals to getinvolved in the projectâs work and to research, record and learn about the history behind the names on the memorials, the communities they came from and how to conserve memorials in their own areas. The open day is free and runs from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM inthe Chancel behind Leicesterâs All Saints Church at 107 Highcross St. The project was formally set up in 2012 by Denis Kenyon and Chris Stephens who having witnessed the destruction of memorials at St Saviourâs Church were determined to create an organisation able to take direct action to rescue other memorials at risk of being lost through theft or vandalism. In 2013 the project received Heritage Lottery Funding, and since then has gone from strength to strength. âThe open days are a great way for the public to see the many different memorials from various conflictsâ says Denis Kenyon. âThese range from the three-metre high WW2 memorial window rescued from the Aylestone and District Working Menâs Club, to the moving inscription which commemorates those of theLeicester Boy Scouts Association lost in WW1.â âThereâs a Latin inscription on one of the memorial tablets dedicated to those from Alderman Newtonâs school who lost their lives in the two World Warsâ notes Project co-founder Chris Stephens. âThe inscription translates as ânot for ourselves but for those who followâ. We hope that those visitors who see our exhibition at the open day join us in adopting and embracing this motto for future generations.â For more information about Leicester City, County & Rutland At Risk War Memorials Project visit: www.atriskwarmemorials.co.uk About the Leicester City, County & Rutland At Risk War Memorials Project The Leicester City, County & Rutland At Risk War Memorials Project exists to rescue war memorials at risk of loss or damage from closed or deserted buildings e.g. churches, factories, clubs or schools.
