  • Gentle, Angry Women' award-winning film tour comes to Leicester

‘Gentle, Angry Women’ is the latest documentary film by award-winning Cornish film company Awen Productions. Phoenix, Leicester Monday 15th June 2026 7pm. The story follows three young women as they retrace the march from Cardiff to Greenham Common, forty years on from the first Women’s Peace Protests. The film has just won the Celtic Media Festival award for History (Screen) and director Barbara Santi believes that, in light of current conflicts, the message of Gentle, Angry Women is more relevant than ever. “In a time when young people are grappling with climate crisis, global conflicts, and technological isolation, they need to see how previous generations of 'gentle, angry women' faced seemingly impossible odds and refused to give up. This history belongs to them, and they have a right to claim it.” Following a sold-out premiere, the film is returning for its 2026 tour of venues across the UK and will be heading to Leicester this month. Gentle, Angry Women will be screening at Phoenix, Leicester on Monday 15th June at 7pm. The film is showing as part of 'Green Screen', a new monthly programme at Phoenix, presenting films looking at climate change, activism and sustainability. This special screening will be followed by a live online Q&A with film director Barbara Santi, providing a fantastic opportunity to hear more about the process of creating the documentary. Poppy (16) joins her peers Xanthe (17) and Evie (19) on the 110-mile march to Greenham Common to uncover its lost legacy. Along the way, they meet the Greenham Women who spent years at the peace camp, hearing their stories and prompting intergenerational conversations about the world today. The young women are passionate about a range of environmental and social justice issues, from Black Lives Matter, to climate change, women’s rights, and animal activism. Gentle, Angry Women provides a platform for connection and dialogue concerning the key issues of our time. Audiences have found the film to be an inspiring watch. "A really humbling story of collective women's activism and a roller coaster of emotions for the audience." “Powerful, poetic, and unapologetically bold.” The protest at Greenham Common lasted for 19 years and was one of the largest women’s movements in British history. Despite this, many people have never heard of Greenham Common, including the young protagonists in Gentle, Angry Women. Even the film’s director Barbara Santi herself admitted that she didn’t previously know much about the protests. “I belong to the generation that should have inherited and passed on these stories, yet failed to do so,” she admits. “I’m working to repair that broken chain of women’s collective memory.” “Every woman deserves to know her own history - yet an entire generation has been robbed of the knowledge that thousands of women once lived for years in makeshift camps, facing arrest and ridicule to prevent nuclear war.” As well as highlighting the vital role of women in the Greenham Common Peace Protests, the film has created pathways for young women in the production of the documentary itself, allowing them to thrive in technical production roles. Santi believes that giving a platform to uplift women emulates the ethos of the film itself. “The film champions small acts of defiance and community building as powerful forms of resistance. At its heart, this is a film about hope - about finding strength in gentle anger and discovering that the most profound changes often begin with the smallest, most personal acts of courage.” Tickets and further information about the film, including the trailer, can be found on the Folklife Films website, under ‘Gentle, Angry Women’. • Special event to celebrate and thank carers

Celebrating this Carers’ Week Unpaid carers are hidden heroes within our local communities and a special event has been held to say a big thank you to them. This week, Leicestershire County Council brought together 30 carers from across Leicestershire to recognise the vital contribution they make to the people they support. The event – held during Carers’ Week - is part of the council’s wider commitment to making sure more people recognise themselves as unpaid carers and know where to turn for help. Many people support a family member, partner or friend without identifying as a carer, meaning they may miss out on advice, practical help and emotional support. The council also took the opportunity to hear directly from carers about their experiences as it refreshes its Carers’ Strategy, helping shape better support for the future. Councillor Michael Squires, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care said: “Unpaid carers are unsung heroes, providing invaluable care and support every day, often without recognition. This event is our chance to say a heartfelt thank you for everything they do. “We also want carers to know they are not alone. If you look after someone who could not manage without your help, you may be a carer and support is available. By listening to people’s first-hand experiences and refreshing our strategy, we want to make sure they feel recognised, valued and better supported.” It’s thought that there are around 60,000 unpaid carers in Leicestershire - nearly 10 per cent of residents. More than 300 unpaid carers have helped to shape the council’s new support strategy which is due to launch later this year. Leicestershire County Council News - Wednesday, 10 June, 2026

  • PCC grants extra funding to change driver behaviour and improve road safety

Communities with long-standing road safety issues are benefiting from extra funding to encourage motorists to slow down and heed speed limits. Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews has set aside an additional £30k for community-driven road safety projects in response to the huge demand for grants in the latest round of his Community Action Fund. The round exclusively focused on road safety – a top concern for the public – and attracted 55 applications worth over £340k – more than double the value of funding available. As a result, the PCC has approved a further six projects as part of his ambitious mission to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on the area’s roads and enhance support for communities. Among the beneficiaries are Sproxton Parish Council which has received £3k for the purchase and installation of a mobile vehicle-activated sign on Sproxton Village Green to tackle long-standing residents’ concerns about speeding across the parish’s three villages. Sharnford Parish Council has received £2,500 to introduce traffic-calming measures on Aston Lane to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for all road users. Aston Lane is a busy access route, and speeding has been a long-standing concern for residents. The new measures will help slow vehicles as they approach the village. Meanwhile, Market Bosworth Parish has secured £763.88 for the installation of four additional 20mph roundels across Rectory Lane, Park Street and Barton Road, along with a new ‘SLOW’ road marking on Barton Road, to reinforce the recently introduced 20mph speed limit and to improve driver compliance. These markings will provide clear visual reminders for motorists to reduce speed, supporting the wider town centre improvement scheme completed in 2025. The project will also strengthen existing road safety measures and help create a safer environment for both drivers and pedestrians. Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews said: “Road safety is on everyone’s agenda – this was clear by the volume of applications I received when I launched the original funding round. The reasoning and need for so many of these proposals was strong, and so I am delighted to extend the funding to make a difference in these communities. “Previous public surveys have shown a high level of concern about speeding and anti-social driving across all our communities – both urban and rural. I will not allow this recklessness to endanger lives without consequence and will support residents to take action to bring about change through education and practical deterrents. “Road safety is society’s problem and impacts all of us. We must share the responsibility for protecting lives and preventing more unnecessary tragedies on our roads. I am grateful to all our community leaders and volunteers for their sterling efforts keeping Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland’s roads safe.” The Community Action Fund forms part of the Commissioner’s exciting new approach to community safety which emphasises the power of prevention and partnerships to build safe and prosperous communities. With the principle of ‘prevention’ at the heart of the PCC’s new Police and Crime Plan, the Commissioner is determined to equip communities with the skills, knowledge, funding and support they need to help residents thrive and stay safe.

  • Leicester Carers Week Event Highlights Growing Need for Support

Who Cares for the Carers? Leicester Carers Support Service Event Offers Support and Advice People across Leicester who help care for a loved one are being invited to a special Carers Week event next week, offering support, information and a chance to connect with others who understand the realities of caring. Hosted by Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland and our Leicester Carers Support Service, the event is open to anyone who provides unpaid care for a family member, friend or neighbour. While many people see themselves as "just helping Mum" or "looking after Dad", they may not realise that they are carers and could be entitled to support. Raising awareness of this is a key focus of the event. The scale of caring across the city is significant. More than 26,500 people in Leicester identified themselves as unpaid carers in the 2021 Census, while over 10,120 carers are currently eligible for Carers Allowance. The event aims to help carers recognise that support is available and that they don't have to navigate their caring role alone. Visitors will be able to chat with the Leicester Carers Support Service team, learn about local services, and meet other carers in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Free tea, sandwiches and cake will be available throughout the day, and Mohins Chemist will be offering free blood pressure checks to help carers take a moment to focus on their own wellbeing. Dave Bushby Carers Support Team Manager for the Leicester Carers Support Service said: "Carers spend so much of their time looking after someone else that it's easy for their own needs to slip down the priority list. Carers Week is a chance to recognise everything carers do and remind them that support is available. Whether someone has been caring for years or has only recently found themselves in that role, we'd love them to come along, have a chat and find out what's on offer." The event forms part of Carers Week 2026, a national campaign highlighting the contribution of unpaid carers and encouraging communities to become more carer friendly. Anyone who provides care and support to a loved one is welcome to attend.
